Castle Hill

New Development on Castle Hill

The Council has undertaken a major capital project, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Arts Council for NI, to provide town centre heritage park on the site of O'Neill’s castle and a new all purpose Arts and Exhibition centre in the old Belfast Bank Building, now renamed as Ranfurly House.  Work is underway to landscape the park and build an extension to Ranfurly House providing a direct access to the park from Market Square.

The site on Castle Hill is of major archaeological significance which has been the location for Queens University and Time Team archaeological exploration.  It also offers unrestricted views of most of the province of Ulster and, when complete, will provide visitors and residents a unique experience of the early development of the town of Dungannon.

The two remaining towers of the KnoxHannington house, built in 1790, have been conserved and form an iconic centre piece to the park.  Work is due for completion in July 2012 and is designed to enhance the visitor experience to the town along with the new public realm scheme for the town centre which will create new pedestrain/market/parking and event locations in a revitalised townscape.  The Council has embarked on both these projects as the first steps in the regeneration of the boroughs main market town.  In total, both schemes represent a public sector investment of approximately £7 million.
