Dungannon & South Tyrone Borough Council hosts
Business Information Seminar

On Thursday 18 June 2009, Dungannon & South Tyrone Borough Council hosted ‘Business Matters’ a Business Information Seminar in the Bank House Hotel Dungannon.
Attended by a cross sectoral audience from the Engineering, Construction and Manufacturing industries, delegates’ heard practical business advice and ideas for business survival from guest speakers including Sean Cavanagh Cavanagh Kelly Chartered Accountants and Paul Slevin Commercial Manager, Bank of Ireland Dungannon Branch.

The seminar provided an opportunity to exchange information on best practice and possible solutions for SMEs’ in the current economic downturn. Elected Council Members heard at first hand the issues which matter to local SMEs’ and as a result Council has an opportunity to consider how best to address these.
Commenting on the event Council’s Mayor Councillor Robert Mulligan said “the event was held to explore and exchange ideas on what matters to our local businesses. As part of this Sean Cavanagh from Cavanagh Kelly Chartered Accountants shared his expertise as did Bank of Ireland’s representative Paul Slevin. The Council hopes those attended found the session helpful and picked up some advice that will see them through this current economic climate and help them plan for the future”.
Councillor Walter Cuddy Chair of Council’s Economic Development Sub Committee added “the Seminar has been a first initiative for the Economic Development Sub Committee, we hope to continue to develop close working links with our private and social enterprise sectors as this can only provide confidence building measures as we all need to support each other in the current business climate.”
Council also presented an overview of its Economic Development Action Plan for 2009 – 2013 highlighting a number of potential programmes which will have a key focus on;
- Assisting local businesses to Grow and become more Competitive
- Promote Product Invention
- Promote the Young Entrepreneur Competition
- Promote the Young Scientist Competition
- Develop Training methods in the Financial Services Sector
- Develop SME Innovation Programme for Engineering and Manufacturing SMEs’
- Strategically position Dungannon and South Tyrone as a place to do business
- Expand and develop the Tourism sector in the area
Approximately £320,000 has been allocated towards these programmes and is supported by the European Regional Development Fund under its European Sustainable Competitiveness Programme for Northern Ireland (2007-2013).
