AIR QUALITY
Air Quality
A system of Local Air Quality Management has been in place in the UK since 1997. The overall aim is to ensure that the national air quality objectives will be achieved in all areas.
Under the Environment Order for Northern Ireland (2002) Dungannon and South Tyrone Borough Council review air quality and assess whether any locations are likely to exceed the national objectives.
If air pollution levels in an area are likely to exceed these objectives, an Air Quality Management Area (AQMA) must be set up. The most common pollutants are:
- Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2)
- Sulphur Dioxide (SO2)
- PM10
PM10 and NO2 are attributed to mainly road traffic. Find out more about these pollutants at: www.airqualityni.co.uk/about.php
Air Quality Management Area
Once a declaration of an AQMA’s has been made an Air Quality Action Plan must be developed to address the problem.
In Nov/Dec 2007 we set up an AQMA, this is located at:
- Church Street, Dungannon
