Visitors from Los Angeles make a difference in the Borough
Dungannon and South Tyrone Borough was lucky enough to receive a group of visitors from Los Angeles at the start of April 2008. The group, linked to the area through the Vineyard Church, Dungannon, came with the intention of making a positive difference to the lives of local people and to the local environment.
As well as giving assemblies and talks in schools, the very active volunteers gave up their time to carry out clean ups and habitat management activities in conjunction with the Agenda 21 and Biodiversity Unit of the Council.
On Monday 7th April the group took the litter around Ballysaggart Lough by storm, gathering up quite an amount of debris for disposal. The following day, undeterred by their hard work at Ballysaggart, the group collected litter at Washingbay and undertook the removal of some of the invasive weed in the area, Himalayan Balsam. They also put up Tree Sparrow nest boxes in the area to help support this species, which was widespread across Northern Ireland but is now restricted to areas such as around the shores of Lough Neagh.
Members of Muintir na Mointeach were kind enough to provide light refreshments and hospitality for the visitors at the Washingbay Centre for Healthy Living.
