Fairtrade Forum for Key Stage 2

Fairtrade Forum for Key Stage 2

November 2007 saw the first Fairtrade Forum take place in the Borough.  The Forum took place in Castlecaulfield Pavilion and was co-ordinated by Agenda 21 as part of the Council’s Fairtrade Initiative.

Four primary schools took part:

  • Donaghmore Primary School;
  • St Joseph’s Primary School, Galbally;
  • St Patrick’s Primary School, Coalisland and
  • Walker Memorial Primary School, Castlecaulfield.

All the pupils participating split into four groups and circulated around the interactive workshops.  Workshops were kindly lead by representatives from Concern, Save the Children, Traidcraft and Agenda 21.  The workshops dealt with issues such as:

  • Which parts of the globe many of our foods come from;
  • How the price of these foods is shared out through the production chain, fairly or unfairly;
  • How trade rules can work against poorer countries and
  • How children are the most at risk when workers in developing countries are marginalised.

All of the workshops linked back to showing how supporting Fairtrade helps developing country's disadvantaged producers get out of the poverty trap and to lessen the global gap between the rich and the poor.

All in attendance were treated to a Fairtrade break, to ensure everyone had a chance to sample some Fairtrade foods, such a cereal bars, fruit, cookies, tea and coffee.

A Fairtrade quiz brought the Forum to an end and tested the pupils on their newly gained Fairtrade knowledge.

The Mayor of Dungannon & South Tyrone Borough Council, Councillor Barry Monteith, presented each school with a certificate to certify that they had participated in the Borough’s first Fairtrade Forum.

These Key Stage 2 pupils, brimming with Fairtrade knowledge, can act as Fairtrade ambassadors for their schools and for their communities, helping to promote Fairtrade.  Raising the profile of Fairtrade is one of the first steps to becoming a Fairtrade school.

The Council’s Fairtrade Initiative provides a range of educational opportunities - especially for pupils from Key Stage 2 onwards, and so primary schools in the Borough are encouraged to become involved. Fairtrade is an excellent way to bring the global dimension into pupils’ lives, allowing them to link local actions with global impacts.  This ties in well with the Global Dimension element included in the Revised Curriculum.
