Dungannon and South Tyrone Local Biodiversity Action Plan

The Project

The Dungannon LBAP Project falls into 3 stages:

  1. In the first year a biodiversity audit of what habitats and species are in the Borough will be undertaken.
  2. From the audit it can be assessed which habitats and species in the area are most important at a UK, NI and local level.  This will enable a number of ‘Action Plans’ to be developed to improve the area for these habitats and species.
  3. The third stage of the process is to implement these projects on the ground.

The Biodiversity Audit

A biodiversity audit is essentially research to produce, in its simplest form, a list of the main habitats and species that are found in Dungannon Borough.  It brings together the best available information on the state of the local biodiversity resource.  The audit is vital to establish what habitats and species occur within the Borough.  This will enable an assessment to be made as to what is most important at a UK, NI and local level prior to priorities for local action being set.  The biodiversity audit will contain two main sections, namely habitats and species.  It may also highlight where there are gaps in information, which can stimulate new data collection and research through the LBAP process.

The Biodiversity Action Plan

The audit will be used as the basis from which the Dungannon LBAP document will be created.

This documentwill describe the main features of biodiversity in the Borough, identify the main issues, (threats), affecting them, and propose measures, (projects), to support the conservation and enhancement of biodiversity for the Borough.  It is the LBAP that will ensure that the biodiversity of the Borough is maintained and enhanced through the development and implementation of Habitat Action Plans and Species Action Plans, which reflect both national and local priorities.  It will be based largely on the targets set out in the Northern Ireland Biodiversity Strategy, translating regional strategy into local action.

Biodiversity Projects

The third stage will be to implement the LBAP on the ground.  This will include carrying out projects on sites to improve their value for wildlife in general, as well as a number of either habitat specific or species specific projects that have been identified in the Action Plans.
