Dungannon & South Tyrone Biodiversity Action Plan

Dungannon & South Tyrone Local Biodiversity Action Plan

Welcome to the Dungannon and South Tyrone Biodiversity Action Plan web page. This page provides details of the project, however, if you would like further information or to become involved, please get in touch via the contact details at the bottom of this page.

What is biodiversity?

Biodiversity is the short term used for ‘biological diversity’, which is, ‘the total variety of all living plants and animals, and the habitats in which they live’.  It encompasses the entire range of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, invertebrates, plants, fungi and micro-organisms.

(For further details go to the Biodiversity page)

What is a Local Biodiversity Action Plan (LBAP)?

The threats to biodiversity are now recognized.  Local Biodiversity Action Plans (LBAPs) are seen as the means by which biodiversity can be protected and enhanced.

(For more information on the Policy context of LBAPs go to the LBAP Policy page)

The Dungannon and South Tyrone LBAP will outline a plan of action to:

  • Conserve and enhance the rich biodiversity of Dungannon for both current and future generations;
  • Educate and raise awareness of the importance and variety of biodiversity found within Dungannon, and;
  • Encourage local ownership of Dungannon’s biodiversity.

The Plan will include the preparation and implementation of action plans covering a range of habitats and species. It is supported by representatives from a variety of organisations and individuals with an interest in Dungannon’s natural environment.  Everyone who lives in Dungannon Borough has an important part to play and with your support we can help protect our unique wildlife resource.

(For more information go to the LBAP Project page

Biodiversity within Dungannon and South Tyrone Borough

There is a great variety of wildlife in the Dungannon area – important habitats include unimproved grassland, mature woodlands, inter-drumlin wetlands, bogs, fens, rivers, ponds and lakes.  Each of these habitats supports their own range of plants and animals.  The Biodiversity Audit will identify these habitats and the species that can be found in them.

Getting Involved

For the Dungannon Local Biodiversity Action Plan to be successful, it is vital to have the support and involvement of local people and organizations. There are many ways you can play a valuable part in the LBAP process.  These include: recording species, attending biodiversity events and doing something for wildlife in your garden.

(For further information go to the Getting Involved page)

If you have any special areas of interest or knowledge, e.g. of birds, moths, mammals etc., within the Borough, the Biodiversity Officer would be delighted to hear from you.
