The award winning company, OUROBOROS, will perform Brian Friel's play "Making History". This seminal event, The Flight of the Earls, in Irish history has cast a long shadow over Ireland's political and cultural life and has been brilliantly addressed by Brian Friel (arguably Ireland's greatest living playwright).
Ouroboros intends to tour Making History in three stages by retracing:
- The journey to the Battle of Kinsale (in reverse);
- The journey from Mellifont Abbey to Rathmullan, via Dungannon (O'Neill's birthplace) and Donegal, where O'Donnell lived; and
- The journey from Rathmullan to Paris to Louvain
This follows an extensive education and outreach programme which has been run in tandem with the play. We also plan to celebrate the official opening of both significant sites to the public with Pyrotechnic shows at Castle Hill and Tullyhogue with a festival of Culture including music, song, dance and activity celebrating the 400th Anniversary of this significant period in Irish history. These events will mirror image the week long events happening simultaneously in Rathmullan to coincide with the commemorative date of the 400th anniversary of "Flight of the Earls".
