Neighbourhood Renewal

Overview

In June 2003, Government launched "People and Place - A strategy for Neighbourhood Renewal". This long term (7 - 10 year) strategy targets those communities throughout Northern Ireland suffering the highest levels of deprivation. Neighbourhood Renewal is a cross government strategy and aims to bring together the work of all Government Departments in partnership with local people to tackle disadvantage and deprivation in all aspects of everyday life.

Neighbourhoods in the most deprived 10% of wards across Northern Ireland were identified using the Noble Multiple Deprivation Measure. Following extensive consultation, this resulted in a total of 36 areas, and a population of approximately 280,000 (one person in 6 in Northern Ireland), being targeted for intervention.

There are two Neighbourhood Renewal areas in the Borough, Dungannon and Coalisland.

Where we live can greatly influence our opportunities in life.

Neighbourhood Renewal is a targeted programme of support funded by the Department for Social Development and is aimed at areas which have been identified as most disadvantaged.

Neighbourhood renewal is about reversing this spiral of decline. It is about working from the grassroots to deliver economic prosperity and jobs, safer communities, good education, decent housing, physical environment and better health, as well as fostering a new sense of community among residents.

Each Neighbourhood Renewal area has a dedicated Partnership which is responsible for the social, community, physical and economic renewal of the area it serves. There is a Neighbourhood Renewal Partnership in Dungannon and a Neighbourhood Renewal Partnership in Coalisland.

Each Partnership consists of members representing a wide range of statutory, voluntary and community organisations as well as Residents from the identified Neighbourhood Renewal areas.

Each Partnership works across Government and with a range of partners to ensure that, in 10 to 20 years time, no-one is seriously disadvantaged by where they live.
