Agenda 21
Agenda 21
Think global, Act local.
The United Nations Conference on Environment and Development, held in Rio de Janeiro , Brazil, in 1992, (Commonly referred to as the Rio Earth Summit), gathered together nearly 200 world leaders to address global concerns about the environment.
Agenda 21 is the name of the document which formed the Rio Declaration on Environment and Development, which was adopted by more than 178 Governments at the Rio Earth Summit.
Agenda 21 is a comprehensive plan of action to be taken globally, nationally and locally by organisations of the United Nations System, Governments, and Major Groups in every area in which human impacts on the environment.
These areas include combating poverty, changing consumption patterns, promoting health, combating deforestation, protecting fragile environments, conservation of biological diversity and integrating environment into decision-making.
The full implementation of Agenda 21and the Commitments to the Rio principles, were strongly reaffirmed at the World Summit on Sustainable Development, (WSSD), held in Johannesburg, South Africa in 2002.
Dungannon and South Tyrone Borough Council’s Agenda 21 Unit is in place to ensure the principals of the Rio Summit are delivered on at a local level through a variety of initiatives. Please see Agenda 21 sub-pages pages for more information on such projects.
