Introduction

Forty-two miles west of Belfast on the MI and right in the centre of Northern Ireland, the Borough of Dungannon & South Tyrone lies in a scenic area immediately south west of Lough Neagh. This location offers easy access to all other parts of Northern Ireland, UK, Europe and beyond. Belfast International Airport (41 miles from Dungannon), George Best City Airport (Belfast City) is also within easy reach (46 miles from Dungannon) as well as the Port of Belfast (45 miles from Dungannon).

The Council area is renowned for its specialisation within the Engineering and Food Sectors not only in Northern Ireland but also across the island of Ireland, UK and internationally.

Engineering Centre of Excellence

Dungannon & South Tyrone Borough Council area is recognised as the "Centre of Excellence" for light engineering on the island of Ireland. There is a host of family owned businesses spread within the region in Coalisland, Edendork, Dungannon, Newmills, Moy, Caledon, Donaghmore, Ballygawley, Augher, Clogher, Eglish, Benburb, Fivemiletown and Galbally.
Other key sectors in the Borough include construction, retail and manufacturing. Between them, the agricultural, construction, retailing and manufacturing sectors account for over 76% of all VAT registered businesses in Dungannon. Local Economic Development

Dungannon & South Tyrone Borough Council contributes approximately £1.75 million to Local Economic Development initiatives in its 5-year plan 2001-2006. Population Statistics for Area

Dungannon and South Tyrone Borough Council area has a current population of 47,735, (based on NI Census 2001) representing an increase of 5.1% from 45,428 in 1991. The population age profile of the Borough is broadly similar to that for Northern Ireland as a whole, with just over a quarter (12,315) being children, almost 60% (28,434) being of working age, with the remaining 15% (6,986) being of pensionable age.
