Council Highlights Dangers of Binge Drinking

In a bid to combat under age drinking and to remind citizens of the dangers of binge drinking over the festive season, Dungannon and South Tyrone Borough Council, in association with the Community Safety Partnership and Investing for Health, will distribute an information flyer to off licenses throughout the Borough this week.

Alan Burke, Director of Environmental Health at Dungannon and South Tyrone Borough Council says:

“This is the first part of an initiative by Council to raise awareness of the health implications associated with binge drinking. The campaign follows the concern of elected members with illegal sales of alcohol to young people. Councillors decided to undertake a campaign to highlight the impact on health and the effects that binge drinking can have on others e.g. through anti-social behaviour and town centre violence.

We have joined with the Community Safety Partnership and Investing for Health who also hold an interest in the health and well being of our citizens to promote the dangers of excessive drinking as we approach the festive season.”

Elaine Devlin, Investing for Health Officer for Dungannon and South Tyrone Borough Council also stressed the importance of the role adults have to play in tackling the issue of under age drinking:

“An adult who buys alcohol for minors is not only guilty of a criminal offence but is also contributing to the increased risk of alcohol related health problems for the young person later in adult life.”
