Get Ready to Picnic in the Park!

Publish Date: Thursday, 11 August 2005

Everyone’s going to this year’s Picnic in the Park! Dungannon’s biggest outdoor summer event takes place at Dungannon Park on Bank Holiday Monday 29th August from 2-6pm with a line-up that’s bigger and better than ever.

Follow the colourful street carnival to Dungannon Park in time for the Picnic and join in with an array of vintage vehicles, children’s characters, stiltwalkers, jugglers and lots more. The carnival, known as 'Pageant to the Park', will travel from the west of the town at Railway Park, through Market Square and along the Moy Road to arrive at Dungannon Park at 2pm.

Malachi Cush will compere this year’s event and the musical line-up has an American Legends theme with tributes to the Blues Brothers, Marilyn Monroe, Tina Turner, Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra.

Dungannon’s favourite line-dancing troupe, The Dixie Liners, will entertain the crowds between musical acts and children can enjoy a fun-fair, art workshops - they might even bump into a few familiar faces from their favourite television cartoon shows.

Emma Heatherington, Public Relations Officer with Dungannon and South Tyrone Borough Council is urging the community to come out and enjoy this year’s Picnic:

“Picnic in the Park is the biggest annual event on the Return of the Earls calendar. The Pageant to the Park through Market Square will give the South Tyrone community a flavour of how the Council hopes to host a huge street carnival in 2007 to mark the 400th anniversary of the Flight of the Earls and the Plantation of Ulster. Last year’s Picnic drew crowds of up to 4000 people, so come along early and enjoy the wide variety of entertainment on offer.”

Admission to Picnic in the Park is free, though there will be a charge for funfair rides and art classes. Traders and shoppers are advised to expect minor traffic delays as the Pageant passes through the town between 1pm and 2pm.
