Dungannon Wins Ulster in Bloom

Publish Date: Thursday, 09 September 2004

At a prestigious awards ceremony held in The Manor House in Cultragh yesterday, Dungannon and South Tyrone Borough Council's horticultural expertise paid dividends as the town won a top accolade at the 2004 Translink Ulster in Bloom Competition.

From baskets and bedding plants to floral pyramids and feature beds, the town of Dungannon has been beautifully in bloom throughout the summer months.

This is the third consecutive year of Dungannon's success and the Director of Technical Services, Bertie McMinn expressed his delight as the town was once again nominated to go forward to the Britain in Bloom competition:

The number of entrants are increasing every year and all 26 Councils entered this year, with 147 entrants in total across the various categories. Moy were also rated third place in its category, coming close to the prestigious Broughshane. These awards take us forward to the Britain in Bloom competition, which takes place at the Royal Amoury Museum in Leeds on the 23rd September. We also await results of the Pride of Place All Ireland competition and I wish the  Moy and Charlemont village committee and the Ballygawley Road Community Association the best of luck with their fine efforts. The announcement of Pride of Place will be held in Ennis County Clare in mid October. I would pay credit to the number of sponsors who contributed to the costs, and the residents of Dungannon and Moy who also decorated their windows, homes and gardens with excellent displays. I would also like to thank the public in general for their support and finally to our own staff in the grounds maintenance section for the tireless hours they put in to ensure that all floral displays were kept in prestige condition. It is my sentiments that these successes greatly enhance the environment of the area and put Dungannon on the map.
