It is commonly accepted that effective management skills, knowledge and practices directly impact on the performance of successful organisations and their ability to adapt, develop and improve. However, knowing this is one thing but for many small to medium sized organisations it is difficult to find the time, support and guidance to help identify management skill gaps and plan to meet them.

Dungannon and South Tyrone, Cookstown and Magherafelt Councils' in conjunction with the Department for Employment and Learning (DEL) are promoting a Management: Analysis and Planning or MAP programme for organisations within their three Council areas. Target companies are non-Invest NI client companies, with between 10 and 250 full-time employees, and not currently recognised as Investors in People organisations.

The programme enables the organisation, with the assistance of a business consultant, to complete an on-line assessment of its management and leadership development learning needs. Once completed the company is presented with a Business Improvement report containing a tailored, specific action plan as well as a funded Training and Development plan.

The Department for Employment and Learning fully funds the consultancy support and contributes to the cost of management development training arising from completed Training and Development plans.

Launching the MAP programme promotion for the first time in the Dungannon and South Tyrone, Cookstown and Magherafelt areas, Raymond McAuley, Head of Management Development Branch in DEL said,

"In this particular economic climate it is vitally important that companies have strong leadership skills to provide direction and effective management practices to sustain business survival and plan for and achieve future growth. The MAP programme provides the platform to develop their managers and realise their business potential"

The MAP programme in the region will also act as a valuable preparation tool for businesses who may wish to progress to the Department for Employment and Learning's Investors in People Programme
