Get your 'Mower' Runnin' For Gannonball!
Just when you thought it couldn't possibly get any crazier, organisers of the Gannonball Run have introduced a further element to the August Bank Holiday event - a Lawn Mower Drag Race!
Lawnmower racing is a form of motorsport in which competitors race modified lawnmowers usually of the ride-on or self-propelled variety. The original mower engines are retained, but blades are removed for safety purposes. The sport was invented in 1973 in West Sussex, England, by a group of young men who formed the British Lawn Mower Racing Association. It has since grown to have multiple national organisations in the USA and Australia.
Mayor of Dungannon and South Tyrone Borough Council, Councillor Robert Mulligan says: "This shows how diverse the Gannonball Run really is! A lawn mower drag will add a totally unique angle to what already is shaping up to be a fun filled family event!"
Councillor Walter Cuddy is on the organising committee. He says: "We are continuously looking for ideas to make the Gannonball Run more exciting and appealing to the wider community. The Lawn Mower Drag is sure to be a totally different style of race so grab your mower from the garden shed and get racing!"
The Lawn Mower Drag Race is being sponsored by local business SA Trotter and Andrew Trotter is looking forward to the event. He says: "We are delighted to be supporting this unique new event particularly in our 50th anniversary year. This year's Gannonball Run promises to be bigger and better than last year, particularly with the introduction of the Lawn Mower Drag Race."
