DUNGANNON SUPPORTS LUPUS NORTHERN IRELAND WITH FELIX 1OK

Publish Date: Tuesday, 09 September 2008

Dungannon gets set for the fourth FELIX10k road race on 20th September when hundreds of people will descend on the County Tyrone town to raise funds for Lupus Northern Ireland.

In memory of Felix McCullough, who died at the young age of 32 from the rare incurable immune system illness, Dungannon and South Tyrone Borough Council, friends and family are putting the final touches to what has become an annual event to heighten awareness of the acute disease.

Over 200 people rose to the FELIX 10K challenge last year with Lupus Northern Ireland receiving over £1000 from race entries and individual fundraising efforts.

Mayor of Dungannon and South Tyrone Cllr The Lord Morrow MLA of Clogher Valley commented:

'The Felix McCullough 10k is a fitting tribute by the staff of Dungannon & South Tyrone Borough Council to a former colleague. It is also becoming increasingly prominent in the Northern Ireland athlete calendar. Most importantly it gives the public the chance to take part in sport as well as contributing to a worthy cause".

Some 50,000 people in the UK are thought to have Lupus with 90% of sufferers being female, mainly between the ages of 15 and 55. The disease comes in two different forms - Systematic Lupus and Discoid Lupus.*

Leigh Gilmore, FELIX 10K race co-ordinator, Dungannon and South Tyrone Borough Council commented: "FELIX 10K has been a victim of its own success and continues to grow with the level of entries increasing each year. We are very excited about the fact that this will now be the fourth consecutive year the race has taken place, and have received entries from all over Northern Ireland and beyond. Lupus is something that we are all very passionate about at the Council and therefore want to communicate that this is not just a race but also a fundraiser. Therefore, we are encouraging those that have not already signed up to do so."

FELIX 10K will begin at 12noon at Dungannon Leisure Centre, Circular Road, with twelve different race categories ranging from under 19 males and females to 60+ male and female. The 4K Fun Run will commence at 11am. The first 300 applicants will receive a commemorative FELIX 10K T-shirt.
