Publish Date: Wednesday, 27 August 2008

The first ever Gannonball Run took place Bank Holiday Monday 25th August and was a roaring success! 23 teams took part in this crazy and thrilling event which saw 'soap box' carts scuttle from Castle Hill down a specially made track through Market Square in a fun filled, fast paced family event!

Throughout the day over 3000 people gathered around Dungannon town centre to witness the breath taking action of the races and to enjoy the side shows on offer which included a Mini Copper static exhibition and a demonstration by Dungannon Motor Club.

The twenty three teams which entered the Gannonball Run all showed tremendous originality and it was obvious that a huge amount of work had went into each cart. Although the competitiveness and desire to win was strong only one cart could take the overall prize -'Crash and Burn' This category went to 'Dark and Vader' team Captain Jason Shaw along with teammates Johnny Smith and Mark Frizell took the glory.

Other winners also included 'Starship Enterprize' a group of Ladies from Dungannon Enterprise Centre who stood out and won 'Most Innovative Design'. The private entry category was awarded to Dungannon Motor Club and the Corporate Entry Category was won by Chieftain Trailers.

Cllr Walter Cuddy Chairperson of Dungannon Regeneration Project (DRP) is delighted with the success of the event:

'This was a great event, which saw big crowds flock to Dungannon Town Centre. The opinions relayed back to me about the event demonstrate that it was very successful and has the potential to become even bigger as there is big interest in this type of sport. A number of local organisations and business have worked in partnership to make this a successful event, and we hope to work on this next year to create a bigger and better event to showcase what Dungannon and the surrounding areas has to offer. I would like to emphasis that this is a partnership and we would like to see more community groups, organisations and business show their support and get involved with next year's Gannonball Run'.
