Youth Partnership Project in Portugal

Are you interested in learning about  Portugal’s country and culture?

The South Tyrone Youth Management Committee (STYMC) was established during 2002 to manage the implementation of £200,000 of PEACE II funding from STAP LSP for programmes for young people in the South Tyrone area. Out of this money £15,000 is committed to a youth partnership initiative. The project is a partnership between STYMC, Migrant Workers Forum, SELB and Eurolink.

The project aims to:

  • Establish a partnership with a youth organisation in Oporto, Portugal
  • To explore cultural diversity between young people from the Borough and Portugal
  • To relate experiences back to the Borough to improve intra community relations within the Council area.

This initiative aspires to foster greater understanding and active co-operation between towns, regions and individuals from the Borough and Portugal. It will give youth the opportunity to discover and explore the similarities and differences between the two cultures, and help combat negative prejudices and stereotypes. It will provide the opportunity for young people to develop both individually and collectively.

This initiative will involve 10 young people from the Borough who are aged between 18 and 25 year old, five from the Protestant and five Roman Catholic. It is designed to provide a stimulating learning experience and to enable participants to learn about each other’s culture and diversity. The participants will take part in approximately ten preparatory sessions commencing at the end of August, including training in basic language skills, anti-racism and cultural diversity. During this time, participants will be taking part in a team building residential weekend.

Further information and application forms on this initiative can be obtained from the Youth Project Officer, South Tyrone Youth Management Committee, Bank Buildings, 26 Market Square, Dungannon or telephone 028 8772 8623. Closing date of applications is Friday 25th June 2004 at 12 noon.

This project has been supported by the South Tyrone Youth Management Committee with funding received from STAP LSP under Priority 3 Measure 2 of the Peace II Programme.
