Council urges workplaces to be racism free-zone
Call made at start Anti-Racism in the Workplace week 2007

To mark Anti-Racism in the Workplace Week (5 - 11 November), Dungannon and South Tyrone Borough Council is urging businesses to be "racism free zones". Anti Racism Week is marked throughout the island of Ireland and is supported by Trade Unions and the business community alike.

The Council, who employ an Anti-Racism Officer, Ligia Parizzi, has several activities planned for the week including a promotional campaign, an event linking migrant workers and trade unions and participation in an event organised by the Migrant Worker Support Network. The Equality Commission has made available anti racism posters and workplace "Racism Free Zone" stickers.

Launching the local initiative Barry Monteith Mayor of Dungannon and South Tyrone said: "Whilst it can be invisible to some, racism is still a harsh reality for those victim to it. This includes anti-migrant racism but also racism directed at Travellers or other groups who have long been in the Borough. We have made efforts in Council to get our own house in order and we strongly support this Anti Racism week. We hope it will be a good focus for workplaces who we would urge make use of posters and organise activities to mark the week."

Ligia Parizzi the Council's Anti-Racism Officer said: "Since we launched an independent reporting scheme for victims of racism over the summer, a fair proportion of the reports that have come to us have involved discrimination or harassment within the workplace. There is a need for concerted efforts to tackle this, and Anti-Racism in the Workplace week provides an opportunity for action."

Employers, trade unions or other persons wanting further information or posters and materials for their workplace can contact Ligia at the Council on 028 87728603 or the Equality Commission on 028 90500600.
