Monday 16th to Wednesday 18th Oct will see Channel Four's Hit TV show "Time Team" come to Dungannon. Time Team has been invited by the council to investigate the archaeology of Castle Hill, in the middle of Dungannon Town.
Castle Hill was previously inaccessible to the people of Dungannon, until recently when the Council bought the site back and re-opened it to the people. The site was at the heart of some of the most important and controversial events of Irish history, and beneath the ground lies valuable evidence of the building and people who lived and fought there.
The site was the ancient King of Ireland, Hugh O'Neill's Home, until he left, in what became known as The Flight of the Earl's.
Over three days, Time Team working with Queen's University Belfast and Environment & Heritage Service Northern Ireland, will carry out an excavation to try and locate Hugh O'Neil's castle, and evidence of the townspeople who lived nearby. This will involve geophysical surveying of the site and trenches being opened in the area of the mast compound, the tarmac in form of the Knox Hannyngton Towers, and the grassy areas on the Eastern Slope.
