MAYOR LAUNCHES SPORTS TOURNAMENT

Publish Date: Thursday, 09 August 2007

Mayor of Dungannon & South Tyrone Borough Cllr Barry Monteith recently launched this year's Cross Border GAA Tournament between competing Under 12 teams from Donegal, Derry, Monaghan, Armagh and Tyrone, which will be hosted by Kevin Barry's GAC, Washingbay on Saturday 25th August. This year, the tournament coincides with the club's annual event for one of their former youth members and is proud to be associated with the club in hosting such an auspicious event for young people.

Gerard Quinn
The Gerard Quinn Memorial Cup is in its thirteenth year and is jointly presented by the Kevin Barry's Club and the Quinn family to celebrate the life of the young Gael. Gerard was an enthusiastic footballer who embodied all the qualities of a future star, and was only 14 years old when he met with a tragic accident in 1993. The Derrylaughan community, who value and treasure the importance of youth were thrown into a state of shock at the loss of Gerard and so every year they remember and celebrate his short life by hosting the Memorial Tournament.

Summer Camp
The Gerard Quinn Memorial Cup is the concluding day of a week of sporting activities. Derrylaughan Kevin Barry's, in its dedication to youth development, have organised a highly eventful Summer Camp at Washingbay with some of the top coaches across Ulster in attendance and is sure to be a resounding success with prizes, awards and a few familiar County Stars will even be putting in an appearance.

Mayor Councillor Barry Monteith stated, "I am delighted to be launching this Event and would commend the organisers for their continuing endeavours in promoting gaelic sports and cross border relations. I would encourage all the participants to work hard, play hard and embark on your matches with exuberance, remembering to win is wonderful but to take part and be a good sportsman/woman will make this tournament and summer school a resounding success for all."

This Project is part financed by the European Union through the Exploring Diversity '07 & Beyond programme managed for the Special EU Programmes Body by Dungannon and South Tyrone Borough Council.
