Mayor Unveils ‘Work of Art’ at Ranfurly House

Publish Date: Friday, 27 April 2007

A unique art exhibition which portrays primary schoolchildren's interpretations of the Flight of the Earls was unveiled today at Ranfurly House, Dungannon by Mayor Councillor Jim Hamilton.

The display depicts a series of images which relate to the Flight of the Earls across a range of mediums and was created by primary school children from St Patrick's PS and Dungannon Primary Schools.

Mayor Jim Hamilton commended the work of all involved. He said:

"The art exhibition we are opening today, portrays how this period of history is seen through the eyes of our young people. I would take this opportunity to commend them on the excellent art work they have produced. Without your participation and indeed your skill we would not be able to host such an event so on behalf of Council - I would thank you all.

I would also take this opportunity to commend the work of the Special EU funded programme 'Exploring Diversity 2007 and Beyond' the medium through which this competition was run. "

This is the first in a series of exhibitions detailing the Flight of the Earls and the subsequent Plantation of Ulster. It will be in place for a period of six weeks at Ranfurly House (former Bank Buildings) and is open from 10am - 4pm, Monday to Friday. The exhibition will eventually combine with other primary school exhibitive work from Rathmullan and will tour through the North and South over the coming months.

The art exhibition was collated as part of Dungannon and South Tyrone Borough Council's Return of the Earls Dungannon 2007 campaign and was co-ordinated by the Tyrone/Donegal Exploring Diversity Together programme. For further information contact Oliver Morgan, telephone 028 8772 8614.

This project is part financed by the European Union through the Exploring Diversity 07 & Beyond programme managed for the Special EU Programmes Body by Dungannon & South Tyrone Borough Council.
