Launch of Phase Two of Exploring Diversity Progranmme

Dungannon & South Tyrone Borough Council, in partnership with Donegal County Council, has recently launched the 2nd phase of the Exploring Diversity and Beyond Initiative. This cross-border initiative has forged closer links between both Councils, who have been working closely together to commemorate the Flight of the Earls and the beginning of the Plantation of Ulster.
An exciting program of events has been collated which will include hosting cross-border food festivals, conferences, political workshops, cultural festivals and many more collaborative events. Dungannon is also to host an international conference on the Flight of the Earls from February 28th until 2nd March, with guest speakers to include Dr. John McGurk, Dr Diarmuid O'Doibhlin, Dr Hiram Morgan, Dr John McCavitt and Mr Roy Garland.
The program has previously networked community and statutory groups and also elected members in joint working on a cross border capacity.
Oliver Morgan, Council's Cultural Diversity Officer is delighted with the success of the affiliation: "This project has further developed our partnership with Donegal County Council, utilizing the significant period of the Flight of the Earls and Plantation of Ulster to develop a shared future within communities on both sides of the border."
While Donegal County Council have recently launched a website dedicated to the commemoration of the Flight of the Earls (www.flightoftheearls.ie), Dungannon & South Tyrone Borough Council have unveiled its eagerly awaited bumper Events Guide for 2007 with over 60 events promising to cater for all tastes. The Events Guide features, amongst many others, a carnival style launch event in Market Square on 2nd March which will bring a funfair, fireworks and live music to Market Square. A series of actions cementing the collaborative work by Dungannon & South Tyrone Borough Council and Donegal County Council over the next 24 months will be part financed by The European Union through the Exploring Diversity '07 & Beyond Programme managed for the Special EU Programmes Body by Dungannon & South Tyrone Borough Council.
