STEM Offers Funding for Businesses
Publish Date: Wednesday, 10 January 2007
Local businesses in the Dungannon & South Tyrone Borough Council area are being urged to start the year on a green footing with the help of the Council funded environmental Project - STEM, before funding ends later this year.
STEM (Sustainable Together through Environmental Management) aims to help a total of 30 local small to medium sized businesses (SMEs) within the Dungannon and South Tyrone Borough Council area to follow the lead of their local Council and implement an Environmental Management System (EMS). Dungannon and South Tyrone Borough Council, through the assistance of STEM, have implemented the international environmental standard - ISO14001:2004 into a number of key departments and are committed to a programme of rolling this standard out throughout the Council.
Through signing up to STEM, local businesses can help manage and reduce the environmental footprint of their business activities i.e. waste disposal, energy consumption, discharges to water and land, use of raw materials and storage of fuel etc. The overall outcome is that the business not only gains a recognised environmental standard - BS 8555, but they also enhance their tendering ability, improves their public image, gain a better understanding of environmental legislation and compliance and improve their overall environmental performance and helps contribute to a more sustainable environment for generations to come - surely a win win situation for everyone!
The STEM Project provides free technical advice and assistance to SMEs from all industry sectors to help guide them through the often daunting and expensive process of implementing an EMS. The STEM Team delivers the EMS through a half day workshop and a number of on site visits.
The Project, which commenced in September 2004, is due to conclude in October 2007. It is important that any business interested in availing of the services of STEM sign up immediately! The interest by businesses in the Dungannon area has been particularly good and places are now limited.

The STEM Project is funded by INTERREG IIIA, nine participating cross border Councils and Southern Group Environmental Health Committee. The project is delivered by Southern Group Environmental Health Committee and is co-ordinated by East Border Region Environmental Working Group.
